Training Courses

RAM Packaging Safety Tutorial:  The DOE Packaging Certification Program developed this web-based tutorial to familiarize personnel the subject of Radioactive Material Packaging Safety and prepare them for the training courses offered by the DOE-PCP. The tutorial covers Regulatory Authority, Packaging Regulations, Quality Assurance, the DOE Packaging Certification process, examples of certified packagings, definitions, and RAM packaging resources (information, training, and web links).  Click here to access the tutorial. For additional information send email to rampac@srs.gov   or contact Larry Gelder (803) 725-8703 or Jeff England (803) 507-5201.

Methods for Reviewing Safety Analysis Reports for Packages and Performing Confirmatory Analysis:    This training course covers the nine chapters of a Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP): General Information, Structural, Thermal, Containment, Shielding, Criticality, Package Operations, Acceptance Tests and Maintenance Program, and Quality Assurance; LLNL has presented this Course since 1986.  This course has a focus on Type "B" Radioactive Material Transportation Packages as defined in 10 CFR 71.  Additionally, these regulations in 10 CFR 71 are compared and contrasted to comparable international regulations in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. TS-R-1.  The Course will be delivered over a two-week period in San Ramon, California.  The course is scheduled for May 1-10, 2012.

Students that successfully complete the EM-33 sponsored course “Methods for Reviewing Safety Analysis Reports for Packages and Performing Confirmatory Analysis” with a passing grade can receive academic credits from the University of California (U.C.), Davis Extension.  Receiving the 5.5 credit units from U.C. Davis Extension is optional and has an additional cost to be paid separately to the University of California after completion of the course.

For additional information contact Terry Freitas at email freitas3@llnl.gov or by phone at (925) 422-5111.

Quality Assurance for Radioactive Material Packaging Training Course:    The annual, two and one-half day training course that is sponsored by the DOE Packaging Certification Program, EM-33, provides QA Training and practical experience for DOE personnel, DOE contractors, other agency personnel, and commercial packaging engineering employees who are required to develop and implement a QA Program Description for Type B or fissile material packaging or prepare the QA Chapter of the SARP for control of design, fabrication, assembly, testing, maintenance, modification, and use of the packaging.  The course begins with information concerning basic QA principles and concepts, and quickly advances to packaging-specific information.  The training course reviews applicable QA packaging requirements from DOE Orders, federal regulations, and NRC Regulatory Guides.  The course includes both lectures and actual problem-solving sessions that apply a graded approach to selected QA requirements from Subpart H of 10 CFR Part 71.

The course will be presented on June 26-28, 2012, at the Argonne National Laboratory, Building 203, Conference Room D-120.  The registration fee is $800 ($700 if registered before June 1, 2012).  Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Bud Fabian at (630) 252-6040 or send Bud an email at rrf@anl.gov.  Additional information, including online registration is available through the Argonne website (click here).

PCP-Sponsored FY12 LLNL Courses:    The upcoming Radioactive Materials Packaging and Transportation Courses are going to be offered by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in fiscal year 2012.
